Lee Blaske composed the “national” section of the music for this performance. He was commissioned to create the score for the entire Mississippi River site. His music will be the last 12 minutes that all of the sites will hear at the same moment. His composition begins with the pristine flow of the Mississippi River in Northern Minnesota and the sounds of a Native American flute. Further along we hear industrial sounds, and still farther on, a nod to the jazz that was spawned in the Mississippi river cities, such as Memphis and New Orleans. The last four minutes open up majestically to the Gulf, and it is during this section that all dancers in each of the sites perform the precise same motions, uniting the entire river. Lee has composed two other pieces for site-specific dances choreographed by Marylee Hardenbergh.
